STEP 1 – WHAT IS YOUR LEARNING STYLE?

Have you ever been in a learning situation when others seem to understand and you don’t?

Or have you tried to learn something new and it doesn’t matter how many times you try, it just doesn’t sink in?

Good news! …It’s not you, it’s how you were trying to study

What is your Learning Style?

Finding your natural learning style is easy and there are not many changes needed for your learning to become optimum for you. All that is required is the variety and balance of resources matched with the type of learner in you. Whilst we all have idiosyncrasies, we all fundamentally fit one of three learning styles. Watch the three videos below to recognise the natural learner in you.

The following pointers will help:

METHOD

The nature of how you learn best

PROCESS

The optimum application of method, time and resources

TIME

Flexibility that allows a learner to complete without stress at their natural pace.

RESOURCES

The right balance and type of resources

Reflective Learning

STEP 2 – CHOOSING YOUR COURSE ENTRY LEVEL

Choosing the right entry level ensures stress free successful study, efficient completion times and cost effective study.

If you have studied a finance module within another non-related qualification or degree, it is a useful guide to knowing you will enjoy studying AAT, but the content covered is insufficient to give you exemption.

It is tempting to think, ‘you know yourself best’ and that you’ll be fine starting at level 3 without any experience or other accounting qualifications. Please don’t, if you start at too high a level, you will fail and waste your money.

AAT is a skill based qualification. Key knowledge is learnt from each level. Houses are built on strong foundations and so is the AAT. Without achieving the right building blocks of foundation knowledge, advanced and then professional knowledge your career or business will never achieve the levels you deserve.

Starting at the Foundation Level

  • Most students will start at the Foundation level. The level 1 is below the normal entry level. The level 1 content is repeated in full and in a lot more depth at
    level 2.
  • We recommend you begin at the Foundation level 2. This level assumes you have no prior accounting knowledge and will start at the very beginning building
your knowledge from that point forward.
  • If you have under 2 years experience using an accounting software package, we recommend you begin with Foundation. Accounting software knowledge
whilst extremely useful, does not teach you accountancy or double entry bookkeeping.
  • Do you have extensive experience using accounting computerised packages, but lack double entry knowledge? You can complete the Bookkeeping at level 2 to gain the double entry knowledge and then progress on to the Accounting pathway for level 3 and level 4.

Starting at the Advanced Level

To start at the Advanced level you will need to already have achieved one of the following:

  • A pass at the AAT Foundation level.
  • A pass in an equivalent level 2 manual accounting qualification for example Institute of Certified Bookkeepers or similar.
  • A level in accounts.
  • Have accounting experience in excess of 2 years with a good understanding of manual double entry bookkeeping.

Starting at the Professional Level

To start at the Professional Level you will need to already have achieved one of the following:

  • A pass at the Advanced Diploma in Accounting level 3 or equivalent.
  • A full accountancy or finance degree.
  • If your degree is in banking or financial services, please speak to Christine on 02394 00 3559. It is unlikely that the accountancy covered will be sufficient to start at level 4. It may be possible to start at level 3. All finance degrees are discussed and assessed on an individual basis.
  • You have 10 or more years accountancy experience at a middle to senior level. Experience must be diverse and varied

STEP 3 – WHAT ARE YOUR CAREER PLANS?

THE AAT ACCOUNTING OR BOOKKEEPING PATHWAY?

Avoid the myths when making your decision. Bookkeeping isn’t easier than accounting. The units studied in bookkeeping are also studied as part of the accounting. The learning content of these units is identical as is the exams.

Bookkeeping study covers financial accounting only to level 3, which is the scope and depth of knowledge required by a bookkeeper.

Accounting study covers both financial and cost accounting to level 4. Someone studying accounting can decide to become a bookkeeper or go further to a senior management role.

Accounting – What Can an AAT Accountant do?

Many financial directors and managers of accountancy departments are AAT Accountants. Becoming an AAT Accountant will open every accountancy career opportunity. Other well paid accountancy roles open to AAT studiers and AAT Accountant are senior accounts assistant, assistant accountant, credit controller, banking or specialist in accountancy software development.

If you are planning to work for an employer, the full accounting route will allow you to go further and create more long term opportunities.

If you are already accounts experienced and studying for promotion, choose the full Accounting route.

If you are beginning your accounting career, employers will offer equal entry level employability to both the bookkeeping and accounting qualifications.

Are you studying for stability in your current role or in a similar role? What is your current role? If it is a middle to senior role then study the accounting route.

If cost is driving your decision, only focus on the Foundation level be it bookkeeping or accounting. The first exam in each of these Foundation qualifications will give you the entry requirements to apply for an accounting role. It is then probable that your future employer will finance the remainder of your AAT studies.

Bookkeeping – What can a Professional Bookkeeper do?

Many Professional Bookkeepers run their own highly successful bookkeeping practices. The practices can be own client driven or a mix of own clients and freelance work for larger accountancy practices. As a self employed bookkeeper, you are in control. If you want to be employed? Professional Bookkeepers are required by employers for accounting roles such as sales ledger or purchase ledger plus many more associated roles.

Are you looking for stability to maintain your current or a similar role? What is your current role? If it is Bookkeeping then choose Bookkeeping for stability. If you want promotions or more long term opportunities, choose the Full Accounting route.

If your career choice is self employment, choose the Bookkeeping route. There will be no gain to you studying the Full Accounting route.

Are you choosing Bookkeeping for affordability? Look at Pick & Mix Self Study, all routes are affordable with Pick & Mix.

If you are beginning your accounting career in employment, employers will give equal employability for both the Bookkeeping and Full Accounting qualifications.

If cost is driving your decision, only focus on the Foundation level. It is probable that your future employer will finance the remainder of your AAT studies.
